Discounts available to Foundation members
Substantial discounts are available on navigation publications for Foundation members. Below is a list of samples, then a quick computation to show that you can save more than the membership donation on even just a short cruise, and indeed save a lot on a longer voyage.
Sample discounts include:
Printed nautical charts of US waters (NOAA/FAA) or international waters (NIMA) -20% on first $100, then -25% on amount over $100, for orders placed at the same time, shipped to the same address
Government Printing office publications 15% (note though that in many cases there are commercial alternative reproductions that sell for less and even have a higher Foundation discount)
Nautical books on almost any subject, -20% in most cases
Navigation and weather training software 20% discount
Your orders and requests for discount information should be placed directly with the
Navigation Foundation

To see what might be available to you at discount, you can look through the online catalogs of the companies that are making the discount donations to the Foundation
Celestaire at www.celestaire.com offers a large range of books, including the commercial editions of the Nautical Almanac, Sight Reduction Tables, Bowditch, plotting sheets, and other products that they produce.
Paradise Cay Publications at www.paracay.com offers a huge selection of maritime books that are available at discount from the Foundation.
Starpath School of Navigation at www.starpath.com offers Foundation members a discount on all of its training software and courses in coastal nav, celestial nav, and marine weather (does not apply to already discounted packages Starpath University and Training Pak).
NOAA and the FAA at www.chartmaker.ncd.noaa.gov and their counterparts at NIMA offer any of their paper charts to members (via Foundation purchases) at discount. Locate the NOAA charts you need with the new online chart viewer.
A sample discount computation for a cruise of, say, 100 to 200 miles into unfamiliar waters, with the implications that you would then want all the published resources available at hand, and that it would take a mimimum of about 6 charts or so, follows here. We put in square brackets the approximate [list price] before discount.
For the trip listed above, you would save about $26 on the charts [$19.25 each]. Make the trip twice as long—or via complex waterway that could easily call for more charts—and you have saved your donation by charts alone.
Then let's say you might want a
Rules book [$14],
Chart No.1 [$10],
Current Tables [$14],
Tide tables [$14],
Light List [$50],
Coast Pilot [$26],
and say some cruising guide [$30]
and some marina guide or history [$20].
This adds up to some $178 all of which are -20% items to members for another savings of $35.
If you take a laptop, some of these references can be downloaded at no charge, and not everyone would want all of these, while others might want more; the exercise is just to show that there is mundane benefit to joining the Foundation besides the will to help further its goals, which in part is to further the knowledge on how to use these resources for safe efficient navigation.
